TechTips At the PowerHouse, we love technology
and how it can assist up in our everyday life. Here is a compiled list of
links with brief descriptions to tools that I find useful. Most of the tips
will be free tools while some may provide utility, they may also have prices.
Let's take advantage of the free stuff.
Skype
- Free Long Distance
I can't tell you enough how much I love Skype. It is an
internet phone service that provides PC to PC talking
for free. And incase you are wondering how they make their
money, you can pay for PC to phone long distance and other
services. Those rates are Great! You can't beat them if
you are calling overseas or outside the country.
SideStep
- Travel Cheaper
I recently read an article in Smart Money magazine that did a comparison of prices
with all the major travel sites on the internet. SideStep won by a landslide.
SideStep consistantly finds the best rates for flights,
hotels and rentals and its search filters are great. I use and recommend this
tool for all your flight travels.
OpenOffice
- Free Software
What if I told you that I could get you Microsoft Office for
free, would you be interested?
Well
SUN Microsystems, creates all the applications that Microsoft
does except they give it away for free. With OpenOffice you
can open and create Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Access files
and more Did I say for free? Complete compatibility. The program
names and some features are different, but it is practically
the same tools. The saga continues... Sun vs Microsoft.
Google
- Google Collection of Services
and Tools
Google is much more than a search tool. And if you haven't
heard of Google Earth then you have to check it out immediately.
As for there tools, I love Gmail & Google Maps and use
them just about daily. There is so much to Google... Go
Look now!
Bug
Me Not
- Avoid Unwanted Email
Have you ever been to a website that had a free service
but you had to give up your email address and expose your
inbox to spam to use so called free service? Well fret
no more! Bug Me Not is a community base site that stores
email addresses, so you can use those sites and not give
up your email address so you won't get all that spam.
Brilliant.
Craigslist
- Online Community
Craiglist is
almost internet heaven... Almost. You can find anything and everything here.
You want to join a band? Search CL. You want a new job? You want to hire an assistant?
Voice lessons, buy furniture, sell furniture, computers, free dirt or even sell
your house... whatever you can think of it is here.
AnyWho
- Online Directory
This is online directory of people and businesses. A modern day version of the
yellow and white pages but nationwide and at your finger tips.
WebMonkey
- WebMaster Resources
If you are a do it yourself type person looking for how-to's
in being a WebMaster or just to learn a little more about
the web and its technologies then WebMonkey is your spot.
They make learning fun. Everything is here and sectioned
off by user experience. There is a section for beginers
to masters. I use this set to touch up and stay fresh.
Imagine a World...
Where we all supported each other and worked together as a team.
Imagine not
having fear and we attacked our dreams and goals with a zest and zeal so unrelentless
that we always achieved and never got discouraged.
Imagine a world with a love so powerful that it knew no boundaries, distance
and saw no skin color.
If you can imagine that, you have just put a thought in motion. Bringing
it that much closer to reality.
Be the change you want to see in the world.
